The comfort zone in golf can feel safe and gives you an illusion of control. However to truly maximise your potential it is important to leave that zone and head for unchartered waters.
This will put your character to the test and help you develop the skills necessary to grow in the face of discomfort and give you the type of challenge you need.
Staying in the comfort zone for too long can lead to stagnation, here are some examples.
The negatives of being in your comfort zone
1.) Limited Growth- When engaging in skills that you are already good at you lack the opportunity for growth. If you only practice 2 foot putts you are unlikely to have success over 25 feet or pitching or driving. Skill development will be low and growth will be very limited. We all know the guy at the driving range that only hits driver and wonders why they can’t score when they play.
2.) Reduced Performance- Complacency can occur when a golfer isn’t challenged. Finding the right sweet-spot for growth is key to keep moving forwards and achieving goals. At golfontrack we use challenge point theory to keep the golfer not just engaged but as a tool for growth and learning.
3.) Mental Stagnation- A lack of motivation can be observed if the golfer isn’t challenged enough. The right amount of arousal is needed to peak interest and motivate them to explore new and interesting challenges.
Comfort Zone positives
Here are the key benefits to stepping outside of your comfort zone.
1.) Skill Development- Learning new skills will level up your overall game making you stronger in previously weak areas. This can lead to more enthusiasm for practice and training as you start to see gains in different areas of the game.
2.) Increased Resilience- Learning to cope with setbacks, adapting to changing situations and facing challenges all lead to an increase in resilience. This will help deal with pressurised situations and lead to great results when needed.
3.) Enhanced Confidence- Completing complex tasks boosts self confidence, as more progress is observed and the golfer becomes more accomplished and more confidence is exuded as a result.
4.) Better Performance- Becoming more skilled in various areas of the game is likely to lead to better performance which can help with overall motivation and enjoyment of the game.
